“Every Child Needs A Safe And Secure Learning Environment”

– Ron DeSantis | Governor of Florida

The rate of gun deaths in the United States reached its highest level in almost three decades last year, according to a study. Both the rates of gun-related homicides and suicides increased by 8% in 2021, reaching levels not seen since the early 1990s.

The rise in gun deaths has been steadily increasing since 2005, but there was a significant 20% increase from 2019 to 2021. The reasons for this increase during the COVID-19 pandemic are not fully understood, but potential factors could include disruptions to people’s daily lives, higher gun sales, stress, and mental health issues.

Over the past 32 years, there have been more than 1.1 million gun deaths in the U.S., roughly the same number as COVID-19 deaths in the past three years.

MENTAL HEALTH

There have been numerous accounts of students and teachers suffering from severe emotional distress during and even after participating in high-stress drills that simulate violent situations at school.

A study conducted by the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Social Dynamics and Wellbeing Lab found that these types of drills, known as active shooter drills, were linked to a significant increase in stress, anxiety, depression, and physical health problems in children ranging from ages 5 to high school age, as well as teachers and parents.

Participants in the study described students “texting their parents, praying, crying” because they believed they were going to die during the training. Parents also reported that their children experienced extreme reactions such as panic attacks and fear in response to mundane triggers like hearing a fire alarm go off.

The effect of these drills cannot be measured and can last a lifetime. These invisible wounds can’t be seen, but you know they’re there.
